Groovy Kind Of Love (Thursday Thirteen #6)

(drum roll) It's officially Valentine's Week! Valentine's is just too cool to only last a single day so I celebrate the entire week leading up to Valentine's Day. I adore chocolates that come in red, heartshaped boxes and sappy cards that make weeping willows like me tear up for hours on end. "I Love You's" make me weak in the knees and I'm a total sucker for how we met stories, cheesy love songs and Valentine's Day diamonds and weddings. A friend once called me hopeless in regards to Valentine's Day. I think that's wrong, I'm hopeFUL...not less.

My husband and I weren't a love at first site couple..not even close. I first met him back in 7th grade. He was one of my neighbors and classmates. Way back then, he was a bit of a rebel with no clear cause and I was already well on my way to being voted "Most Likely To Become a Nun". He was a little bit convict to my little bit convent and at the time we shared a mutual feeling of dislike. If anyone ever said way back then that he would be the one who was there later in life when I would need a friend the most, I never would have believed them.

Fate has its funny ways, though and on my first day of work at a police department after college, I bumped into him on the stairs. No he wasn't in cuffs, he was in a police uniform! (yowsa!). I had already morphed into a little bit rock chick and he had obviously changed his tune, as well. To the shock of many of our former classmates, this May we will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary. I think that deserves an extra Valentine :)

Today is Thursday Thirteen and in honor of Valentine's Week...here's mine...

Thirteen Of My Favorite VALENTINE'S GIFTS

1. My Proposal. My hubby actually celebrated the first "Valentine's Week" without me. He very sneakily proposed to me on Valentine's Day after a week's worth of planning to pull it off. That much effort definitely deserves more than a single day of celebration.

2. My black dress with the gold sequins. Part of my hubby's elaborate proposal was going out to dinner. I had seen this dress in a catalog once and I really liked it but it was a lot of money and I had no occassion to wear it. When I arrived at his apartment as part of his plan, the dress was there, complete with the shoes I wanted and diamond earrings. That dress is now terribly outdated, (soooo early 90's) and I know I'll never wear it in public again but there it sits, right next to my wedding dress in my closet. They are the only two pieces of clothing I will never part with.

3. "Buck Lovies". I'm not sure this phrase exists outside my family, but my mom always wanted those extra large super sappy Valentine's Day cards from my dad. He used to joke that they cost too much and gave them the moniker "Buck Lovies". They are my favorite cards, too and they may be $5.00 and up now, but they will always be "Buck Lovies" to me.

4. Chocolate. I'm not that into flowers. I just don't appreciate them like I should. Chocolate, on the other hand, I worship. Everytime I'm blue the hubby brings me a Hershey Bar for instant happiness.

5. My Partridge Family CD. This is a little over the top, but "I Think I Love You" was playing on the radio once when we were eating lunch with a group of people. We hadn't expressed our feelings to each other much less to anyone else. Imagine my surprise just a few weeks later when we were officially dating and I got a phone call at work. When I answered, "I Think I Love You" was playing on the phone. I knew at that moment that hubby was the guy for me :)

6. My Photoshop Training CDs. I must have been staring confused at Photoshop for a while because hubby gave me training CDs one Valentine's Day. Now I can design my own buck lovies :)

7. Lucky Card. This wasn't a romantic kind of card..it had dancing money on the front of it. When I opened it up a lottery ticket fell out and hubby had written "I hope you are as lucky as I am" inside......AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

8. My heart shaped ruby ring. Something unfortunate and horrible happened to me once that led to years of many physical and financial problems. One Valentine's Day the very bright light was visible at the end of this long dark tunnel and hubby gave me a heart shaped ruby ring. It's not only a symbol of love, it symbolizes rainbows after storms and never having to walk through them alone.

9. My big fish tank. I love watching fish swim. It's mesmerizing to me and works better than Xanax for calming my nerves. The hubby set up a big old tank for me in our family room and he even moved his foosball table out to the garage to make room. What a guy!

10. My digital camera. I'm a little suspicious that hubby didn't just buy me a digital camera to take pictures of the kids, but whatever we use it for, I love it and can't live without it now.

11. Pajama-Gram. Ok, I hate pajamas (really!), but hubby knew I would like the box with the big red bow they came in. I use it to hold all my buck lovies and other cards I've gotten from loved ones over the years.

12. My little kissy bears. I don't know where hubby found these things, but they are two bears that kiss each other with magnetic mouths while playing an elevator version of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe". They are fabulous.

13. License Plates. I don't have this gift quite yet because someone else has them and believe it or not, it's someone who lives by me because I've seen them with my own eyes! They are license plates that say "HBD", the hubby's nickname for me. It stands for Honey Baby Darlin'. Every February when I have to renew my plates, I check if they are available. One time in the future, they will be an awesome Valentine's Week gift.

Happy Valentine's Week to everyone! Make the world a better place and be sure you tell everyone you love just how you feel. Maybe they already know and maybe they don't. Either way, it's certainly a very nice thing to hear.

Wow! Kind of inspirational for me...who has been communicating with my husband in exchanged monosyllables for several days!!!

"I Think I Love You" is one of my "guilty pleasures" on my iPod. If you REALLY want to experience it, put it on a CD and play it in your car and drive down the street with the windows closed and sing it at the top of your lungs!

I own a pair of Kiss, Kiss bears, too! So adorable, aren't they? And, mine were a Valentine's Day gift from a dear friend down in Georgia.

Oh, that's such a sweet list! I'm not into flowers much either, but chocolate is definitely up there for me! One Valentine's Day hubby got me a big ole chocolate bar with swirled words of Happy Valentine's Day on top of the chocolate bar. Mmmm!

It sounds like you make out like a bandit on Valentine's Day! I wish I could say the same, but it's the same ol', same ol' for me. Perhaps I shall print out this list and pass it along to those who need to know! :)

Happy Thursday to you!

How sweet!! My husband's and my wedding rings have two heart shaped diamonds back to back as the main setting, surrounded by 5 diamonds on each side to represent the 10 years we dated...yes, 10. Thanks for sharing!! Happy TT!

Great list - I seem always to have found myself not in relationships for most of my valentine's days so I can't even think of a single VD gift! crazy! maybe you should make buck lovies for people to send to themselves!! :) or else you could rent out your husband to call people and play "I think I love you" on their phones - dang! what a romantic guy!! happy TT and have a great day :)

What a fantastic list of favorites! I saw where you commented on the other Kim's blog that you had a thing for Shaun Cassidy in the 70s....I was just sure I would marry him someday!

Have a great day!

Isn't it great to get gifts from someone who really knows you!

Love your blog!

One of my favorite Valentine's Day gifts was a mix tape (and back then, it really was a tape!) from my future husband.

Who, by the way, I "met" or at least ran across, four times over the course of four years before we actually really "met" and began dating.

I just Loved, Loved, loved your list!! How sweet!! And to top it off, I was almost going to put "Groovy Kind of Love" as one of my 13 love songs.... but decided against it.

The license plate thing got me, because just last night, hubby said to me - we should get license plates that say "A21 J15" and "J15 A21" on them (our first initals with our birth days).... how cute is that?? And he came up with it all on his own!!

Happy Thursday, and thanks for visiting me!

What a great list. I hate Valentine's Day b/c I have NEVER gotten anything for it, even when I was married. I'm hoping My Batman will change that for me this year....

Great list! I am usually single on V day...so I tend to grumble at the holiday!

I found you using the meet and great TT idea!

My TT is up!

Valentine's Day is not my favorite day of the year, but last year I got jewelry, and a baby concieved, hehe. Almost every time my dh gave me jewelry I've concieved a baby, LOL. Even my engagement ring. One time it didn't happen cause dh had a vasectomy, that we later reversed. I'm hoping for jewelry this year, too!

LOVE your list! Sounds like you and yours have a great relationship.

Like mine, your's sounds like a keeper. :o) I'm sure he feels the same way about you.

OK, we don't do a lot of V Day gifts since I kind of buck the system on being "forced" to say I LOVE YOU with gifts, when I love him every day. That said, I really don't recall my gifts so kudos to you for being able to. I do remember things I've gotten for hubster, and I always buy my kids a heart of chocolate... Cool blog! (Meet & Greet TT!)

What a cool list! Buck Lovies is totally rad :) Happy Thursday, thanks for stopping by!

Anonymous said...

I am so with you on #4, I LOVE chocolate. My hubby said to me last night:

"Dear, what do you want for Valentine's Day?"

And I said:

"Wait until the day after and buy me some chocolates. They're 75% off then, and you can get me two boxes for the price of one."

[heh]

I like flowers, as well, but not nearly as much. Truly, the only flowers I appreaciate are those growing in the wild. That's where they are meant to be enjoyed.

appreciate... Yeesh, I tend to have more typos when I'm hyped up on caffeine. :D

What a great list! :)

Ooops! I forgot to mention about our "Buck Lovies".

When my Knight and I were courting he was in the Army. I would find the BIGGEST card possible and send it. Needless to say, the other service men would harass him. BUT, they all confessed how luck my Knight was. ;o)

To this day I still send him BIG cards to his office. He never knows when he's going to get one.

Amy said...

Your hubby is a keeper! I loved every single one~especially the Partridge Family song! I have a few of their cds!

But they are very sweet and very special!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

Awesome list. I can't remember a single Valentine's Day gift I've ever gotten... except maybe my freshman year in college, when my mom sent me lingerie and my friends were so excited to see me getting a package they made me open it right there in the lobby. And there I am, pulling lingerie out of the box.

JAM said...

That's cool about the Partridge Family, I loved that show because it was funny, and Big Sis loved it because of a certain teen idol.

Digital cameras rock, as does chocolate.

The Photoshop CDs are cool too. I use Elements because I didn't want to pay for the "real" Photoshop. I'm sure all it's extra features would need some kind of training.

Anonymous said...

I admit I have a copy of the Partridge Family, but mine is the original vinyl from when I was a kid. Your hubby sounds like one terrific keeper. Great TT and happy Thursday.

I love your TT. And it's given me an idea for how to tell my fella what things he's got me that I love (and by omission those I don't?)... You'd think after all the years he'd have a clue but he really doesn't. Still he does try which is always sweet.

It's easy for me as he likes rock/indie cd's, star wars, simpsons or beer.... can't go wrong.

We are planning to get fish too. Are yours tropical? I'm a hit scared of tropical fish & how hard it might be to keep them?
