Bang Your Head

I am stressed out. I have decided that I must respond to things and people that irritate me. I’ve spent my whole life just trying to glide along around idiotic and rude things. No more.

Today I slipped on the Cat Boots and have been busy kicking one ass after another. This is not a good day for J Ho, my co-workers, the Blood Donation Center, the cable company (who showed up three hours late yesterday), nor Middle Daughter’s Orthopedic Surgeon who thought nothing of keeping us sitting in his waiting room for 2 1/2 hours after our scheduled appointment time.

“Doctor is very busy.” said the receptionist. I hate when receptionists call the doctor “Doctor”. Call him/her “Dr. Whatever” or “the doctor”, but not just “Doctor”. I don’t know why, but it drives me insane.

Well, you know what, tell Doctor that so am I.

She wouldn’t and continued on gossiping about her sex life in Spanish with her co-worker. I asked her again (in Spanish this time) to find out how much longer we were going to have to wait. Her face turned bright red.

What? You’ve never heard of a white girl that speaks Spanish? My ex-husband was good for something after all.

Let me just say this. We didn’t just walk in there demanding to be seen. We had an appointment for 10:15 which was scheduled over a month ago. It was now now 12:45. How long am I supposed to be expected to wait? Maybe next time I’ll just show up whenever I feel like it. I’m busy, too. I have a house, a job, a husband, 4 children, 2 dogs and two 95 year old grandparents (one of whom is having surgery tomorrow) that I have to take care of. Never once have I kept any of them waiting for me for two and a half hours.

Maybe from now on everyone can just show up whenever they feel like it as does the Cable Company and Doctor. Paramedics, police officers, firemen, soldiers....whoever. Doesn’t matter. They’ll get to you when they get to you, no biggie. Just sit back down, shut up and read some old magazines until they’re good and ready to get there.

From this moment on, The Rock Chick will no longer tolerate anyone’s crap, so if you have any you’re looking to unload, please dump it elsewhere. I’m not gonna take it anymore.

You would love me...I am constantly unfashionably early. If I am going to be ONLY 5 minutes early, I call and say I am going to be late.

I have not patience for being kept waiting, but have accepted that I am in the minority...and nothing stokes my fire more than hearing someone else bitching at the receptionist or whatever about the wait.

So, I prepare. I carry my laptop (the orthodontist's office conveniently provides WiFi for free...oh, except for the THOUSANDS of dollars you spend for your children to have perfect teeth...which they won't brush without a thousand reminders. I always carry a book. And if I'm really thinking ahead, I have my iPod loaded with my "white noise" download that is WONDERFUL for drowning out the annoyances of other people talking, sneezing, letting their incredibly loud and annoying ring tones ring, etc.

I think doctors' offices could preempt so much anger by giving you a time frame, offering you the chance to go grab a cup of coffee, do an errand or two, instead of holding you hostage in their waiting room.

One thing I did that made a difference was, once I got past my days of child-bearing (the intent, not necessarily the ability), I switched to a straight gyno instead of an OB/GYN. That way you aren't kept waiting because some inconsiderate pregnant woman had the bad judgment to go into labor right when your appointment was scheduled!22

my sports med doc is late like that; he's worth it, so I schedule around him.

And the last time someone gave me the "The doctor's time is valuable. He's important," my response was, "Mine's more important. I'm a MOM."

That got through REAL fast.

Hang in there.

Sorry you had such a... ah... yucky day. The other ladies shared some good advice.

I use to work for a doctor's office. I hate to tell you this, but sometimes it's the patients fault. Not that it always is. This is why, you schedule a certain amount of time for a visit, according to what the patient tells you he needs to see the doctor for. When they get back into the office, they have a "list" of things. Not just what they told the receptionist. Then a 15 minute visit turns into 30-45 minutes. But like I said, that's not always the story.

As far as the staff, I know that that can make or break a doc. The staff tend to forget that people are there because they aren't feeling well. And some people when they aren't well, well, they aren't their usual happy self. It's a vicious cycle.

It would all be fixed if people just treated people the way they would want to be treated.

Hope your week gets better.

No TT this week? You're name is on the roll.
