Line In The Sand

This morning I was working on my NaNoWriMo novel and having some difficulty in a scene with my main character, Cat. I decided to write fiction based on reality and I had two ideas for a story, one more autobiographical and the other based an event that is happening to another friend of mine. I couldn’t decide which path to take so I opted to take both, to have both scenarios happening to Cat simultaneously. Which believe me, would be more than most people could take, but it makes for a good story.

I was having difficulty determining where Cat, since she’s not entirely me, would draw her proverbial line in the sand regarding a certain situation, when I decided to take a break and go visit my bloggy buddies.

I stopped by Shelly’s blog and in true "Great Minds Think Alike” fashion, she posted a link to an awesome site where you can play with sand! It’s fake sand, but it’s still fun. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to Shelly and I. We’ve often thought of similar blog posts at the same time, but she generally beats me to the sandbox....errrr, punch.

Anyway, if you find yourself with a spare hour and need some zone out and/or creativity time to contemplate your own lines in the sand, head over to This Is Sand and make yourself a sand painting.

This is the one I made:

I call this piece "Geometry" by Jessica The Rock Chick. I know, not all that clever but I'm only 6500 words into my 50000 word NaNoWriMo challenge and I need to save all my creativity for that.

Just a warning, This Is Sand is like quicksand, once you step in, you’re stuck.

First of all, I don't even know how much time I just spent on this! Thanks A LOT!!! lol

Second of all, what do you mean IF you finish the novel? That doesn't sound very optimistic! WHEN you finish your novel, I want to check it out too! :-D

Dustin: Your sand art is amazing! You should post that on your blog. I'm serious! I warned you it was like quicksand, didn't I? Oh, I'm finishing. Had a good run with it last night and I'm up to 8004 words. Still far short of 50000, but I still have a lot to say so I should be ok. My problem, which I have to stop or I won't finish, is editing and rewriting while I'm trying to get the book on paper. I need to get it out, even if its bad an then go back and rewrite some parts. I'm gonna finish!

Congratulations on tackling a novel, have you tried the notecard approach yet? Big broad ideas on a timeline? Remember how they used to teach us how to write research papers? That might help with the two stories.

By the way, I tried the sand and you and Shelly are far better at it than myself. Must be a patience thing.

Dang it, D, do I see a friggin' yurt in those mountains?

Jessica, sand for me is only good on the beach, squishing between my toes.

But your art is pretty cool. :)
