Shower The People

The hubby dubbed me with a new nickname yesterday. I’ll still be The Rock Chick, of course, but I’m just adding something new to my already eclectic resume.

The reason I have a new nickname?

I actually fixed something all by myself.

I have to admit, I’m not very handy around the house. Neither is my hubby, JW, unless it is computer related. When something breaks, we are usually forced to call in professionals (or beg handy friends) to do the repairs.

Yesterday, I went to take a shower to get ready for work. When I pulled up on the little knob to redirect the water from the bathtub spout to the shower, nothing happened. I wiggled and twisted it, but ZIP. Broken. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

I called our favorite plumber, Handy Andy, but he couldn’t come out until Saturday.

Saturday? I couldn’t wait. Time for drastic measures.

Much to the hubby’s worry, I decided to do the job myself. It couldn’t be that hard, right, and if I got myself into “hot water”, well...Andy is coming on Saturday.

I went to the hardware store and bought the necessary parts. Armed with my favorite tools (a wooden spoon and a wrench) and my lowest cut jeans (sometimes I need props to get into character), I twisted off the old spout, taped up the new one and twisted that one back onto the pipe in the wall.

I turned on the water, held my breath and pulled up on the little knob.

A SHOWER! Woo Hoo!!!

I know, I know, hardly home repair job of the year, but for me it was a milestone and “no sweat” at all!

My new moniker? Handy Mandy! Pull up your droopy pants, Handy Andy, there’s a new plumber in town!

Feel free to shower me with praises :)

Well done. I'm one of those handi-challenged men. I would have handled that same situation much the same way you did, though I must admit that I wouldn't have thought of bringing a wooden spoon with me.

I feel great if I put something back together and don't have any pieces left over, and then if it works, WuHoo!

Yay!! Good job... you can start a new weekly post on home repair tips now ;) I'll be looking for you future advice as we're moving into a HOUSE soon and won't have our handy dandy maintenance men at our beck and call. =)

Way to go! :)

Ours is acting up big time. It has since we bought the house almost two years ago! The spout pulls up and the water comes out somewhat, but not all the way. It squeals from the pressure, and you have to push down on the spout and twist up the pull-up dealie at the same time to get it to *mostly* work right.

I fear it will stop working completely soon. So, Handy Mandy, what's the diagnosis? ;o)

Yeaa, good job! I fixed my first drawer today, and though it wasn't as tidy as it should have been (as in I accidentally drilled a hole through the front of it since I was rushing) it looks better than the space that was left behind from no drawer.
