Inspector Gadget

You all know that one of my favorite things is playing “Inspector” Nancy Drew. The original Detective Nancy just used her keen senses and sharp wit to solve mysteries. That, of course, was before CSI and gadgets. If Detective Nancy had technology, there'd be no unsolved cases, that's for sure.

If there’s one thing I like more than Nancy Drew, it’s gadgets! Computers, Digital cameras, iPods and cell phones go right to the top of my list. I am never short of amazed at what technology can put into our hands. How on earth did I ever survive without the internet? I have no idea.

Fortunately, the hubby and I share a passion for these gadgets, which is good because there’s no need to explain to the other why we would want a $500 phone that can probably launch space ships or move satellites or something. We just do. No explanations needed.

A few months ago, I surprised the hubby and bought him the Palm Treo that had caused his salivary glands to runneth over. I thought it was very cool and he told me to get myself one, but the phone seemed very awkward to use. I am left-handed and every time I had to do something with the stylus pen, my hand covered the entire screen.

Usually, if I can’t get something to work in a left handed fashion, I switch to my right hand or I turn whatever it is upside down. Normally, this corrects the problem.

I can’t use my right hand with any kind of a pen (including a stylus) and using this expensive gadget upside down just seemed stupid. Even though my eyes were turning green with envy, it was irritating enough that I decided I didn’t want this fabulous gadget being offered to me.

This weekend, we went poking around and found the Verizon XV6800. It flips up and turns sideways and there’s even a “left handed” setting! YOWSA!

Touchscreen, Windows Mobile 6, QWERTY keyboards, full internet, a built in camera that actually takes nice pictures, and Microsoft Word built right into it! I’m getting flushed just thinking about it! It’s not a phone, it’s a Pocket PC and I’m dreaming of handheld blogging opportunities galore! There’s even software download that allowed me to sync it to my Mac. Vroom. Vroom Vroom. MORE POWER!

If I were Tim The Toolman Taylor I would TOTALLY be grunting right now.

As if that weren’t enough, the hubby found this awesome thing called Slingbox, too. This thing just rocks! It allows me to access my TV and my DVR right from my darn phone. It hijacks my cable signal and now I can watch my TV live as well as any recorded shows I have from anywhere in the world right on my new phone! Holy Moly!

No more missing the end of American Gladiators for me because I’m sitting in a parking lot waiting for my daughter to get out of work! I’ll be able to see The Eliminator in all of it’s glory! And yes, breaking news, too, of course.

What if I need a Bon Jovi fix? Well, now I can see any of my recorded Bon Jovi concerts anytime. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I think you can all tell I’m in heaven with my newest little gadget! What about you?

What’s your favorite “how did I ever live without this” gadget?

I am "Gadget Girl" according to my husband, and I have a Blackberry World Edition (great when we are traveling), but it's not probably my favorite gadget! I had an iPod when they first came out, the old white clunky one, black and white. I loved it!!! I kept it for several years and probably wouldn't have upgraded to an iPod video at all, had I not gotten it as a gift. BUT, I adore that thing! It goes everywhere I go and I have every known accessory for it. During dance class for B, I have watched episodes of Lost that I missed and several other shows. It also allows me to tune people out when I don't feel like talking. (Which isn't all that often). There you go! Second place, my digital camera. It's so awesome! It fell in the river a few years ago and still resurrected. It's a tough gadget. 3rd place is my Mac iBook...wait, maybe that's tied for first. :)

Wow. I think I'm actually frightened. Can it clean my kitchen too?

Just don't hijack my cable signal, k? I can't be having you know that I watch "The Hills"... cause that's just embarrassing.

Having spend part of my career in the industry of getting people addicted to such gadgets, I have somehow become somewhat immune. Only last week did we finally get a flat-screen monitor for the computer. I own a mobile phone without camera, gadgets, etc. and am lucky if I remember to recharge it. Don't tell any potential future employers, but I think I might be a closet Luddite!!
