The Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
All the teens were still stirring, including pet mouse.
The stockings were hung on the railing with care
But how was I supposed to sneak presents in there?
Even though they’re “never tired” I said “Get into bed!”
They obeyed, with MP3 players strapped to their heads.

No time for ‘kerchiefs or a night cap
Time only to wonder when “Santa” gets a nap.

Then from my living room, there rose such a clatter
I sprang from my wrapping to see what’s the matter
My very sweet doggie, whom I normally adore
Knocked my Christmas poinsettia all over the floor.
I grabbed for the vacuum and sucked up the dirt
Muttering things that just might have been curt
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
Oh yes...a little pink nose, a tail, and two tiny little ears!

OH NO! I screeched, but it was too lively and quick
The only allowed visitor tonight is the jolly St. Nick!
More rapid than eagles he scurried ‘cross the floor
All right, mouse invaders, this now is war!

Now, HUBBY! now, ARI! now, SAM and ERICA, too!
On, DANNY! On BOOK‘EM (the dog)! On ME... with my broom!
In the garage, family! Get the traps...from the shelf... on the wall!
Ahhh little rodents, time to dash away, dash away, dash away all!

Mission accomplished, I said “Back to bed!
Wondering where, oh where, is that big guy in red?
Santa? What's taking so long, for goodness sake?
There’s a house to clean...presents to wrap...jell-o to make!

That’s all I asked for; the only thing my list
Some help with Christmas, so why would he resist?
I’ve been good all year. I know you know!
Santa, are you there? Santa? HELLO?!

I spoke not a word but continued my work
I filled all the stockings, my face in a smirk
Amazed by the pile of presents to wrap
I sat by the tree...yes, a five minute nap

I heard it, I swear, an indescribable thump
And there he was, all reindeered and plump
“I know you need help, so I arrived without delay
But you know this is all fanfare, I give you a gift every day.”

With those words, he set out to depart
My eyes opened and I awoke with a start
Looking at everything under the tree
I thought of those words and what did I see?

There was Danny with Guitar Hero rocking us out (muchas gracias, Big BahUna!)
Erica’s pink camera and millions of pictures, no doubt
Sam with her iPod, dancing..frolicking..whatever
And Ari with those UGG boots she’s wanted forever

The hubby’s Blu-Ray player, in which he would revel
Movies, cranked speakers, video and sound to new level
My heart filled with love, just chock-full with glee
Crystal clear became the gift Santa had given to me

Family and Friends, how much I love, if only you knew
And even better, they love me back, too!
A comfy home where there’s always food to eat
There’s really nothing I need, life is wonderful and complete

Our Christmas was fabulous, magical and fun
By the time everyone arrived, I had everything done
We cheered over each gift, no matter how large or small
And I smiled with Santa knowing I had the best gift of all.

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, too!

Wonderful post, so awesomely written....sounds as if all was well at your household...other than Mama Bear layed flat by a mysterious sore throat/ear pain/head cold. All of my not-so-little bears were well pleased with the parcels left by Santa and us. So glad I am thinking we did not bend and buy that Guitar Hero though.

I am glad you had a great Christmas, we came up for air a couple days after but now we are just loafing around like lazy bums. The irony behind teachers getting breaks is that they are so darned broke they can't go anywhere during that time off, lol.

What a great Christmas! Love the poem.

Santa didn't like me this year. I wrote him a very nice letter, all I asked for was to look skinnier in my Christmas pictures. I didn't even ask to BE skinnier. And what did Santa do? Made me look BIGGER than I am in my pictures.
