It's Hard For Me To Say I'm Sorry

You know why? I rarely say anything I don’t mean. I’m thoughtful, sensitive to the feelings of others (ok, except for Paris Hilton) and I’m not racist, sexist or intolerant of most things...except racism, sexism and intolerance.

I’m interested in my readers’ thoughts on a current incident with Tom Hanks apologizing for a statement he made regarding Mormon supporters of Proposition 8 being “un-American”.

I admit, I’m torn in two. To me there is nothing more American than voting your opinion and yet, I honestly believe that not allowing gay marriage is absolute discrimination. Somehow being able to cast a vote in favor of inequity just rubs me the wrong way. It seems Tom Hanks feels the same way.

What do you think? (you don’t have to agree with me, of course)

If it were possible to be American and un-American at the same time, the Mormons who supported Prop 8 would be it. Although I disagree with their stance, one of the things that's great about this country is that people have a right to vote how they see fit.

By the way, did you see the Lifetime movie "Prayers For Bobby" with Sigourney Weaver? It was pretty good. If you missed it, they likely will be airing it again soon.

That'll be pretty tough issues to stay on!

I respectfully decline to comment.

Oh who am I kidding. I'm going to comment.

I agree that they should not have been called un-American for casting a vote in favor of what they believe in. But, then, the proposition in question is a highly controversial matter. Until recently, I probably would have voted the same way until I realized something - that is, I don't feel that it is the government's place to put a ban on homosexual marriage. I don't support homosexual marriage (and that doesn't mean I have prejudices against homosexuals - I just don't support their lifestyle), but recently I have decided that I don't support the government trying to put a ban on it either.

The proposition passed because millions of Californian's voted that way. Though Mormon's may have dumped money into the campaign, they didn't pass the bill. Voters did.

Malcolm: exactly! It's a doozy! No, I haven't seen that movie. I'll put it on my list.

Dusint: see? You understand it exactly!!!

Leanne: Right. I understand that the voters voted that way and the Mormon's don't make legislature. I'm sure Tom Hank's involved the Mormons in his quote because he is the producer of HBO's Big Love. Personally, I think he is correct in thinking it's discrimination, but to single out Mormons like he did was just dumb. Takes away from the point he was trying to make.

There is an old quote "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". We all have our opinions and we have the right to voice them. My problem is when things get violent. Bombing churches and womens clinics is NOT alright!

My Sweet Rock Chick, as the mother of a gay son, and a friend of many gay people, I must voice my opinion here. Dustin, it is not a "lifestyle." I am thoroughly convinced that homosexuality is genetic. Who would "choose" to live a lifestyle where they would be reviled by so many self-righteous people?

Prop 8 stinks. People who want to call a "gay marriage" a "partnership" are playing with semantics---it's a marriage (and as viable as a heterosexual marriage). I would like for my son (and every other mother's son or daughter) to have the right to marry with all its benefits.

As for Hanks' statement, he is entitled to his views. If he weren't a celebrity, it would be no big deal (I wouldn't call them un-American---bigoted, self-righteous, and a lot of ugly euphemisms, maybe).

As for people being able to "cast a vote in favor of inequity"---oh, Jessica. Unfortunately, what you and I might consider inequitable, another person obviously does not. In a democracy, majority rules. When it works the way "we" want it to work, that's a beautiful thing, eh?

I knew you'd pipe in, Shelly ;)

Since I'm not soft spoken about some issues, I think pretty much everyone can guess that I believe that gay people not having the same right to marriage in this country is discriminatory and pathetic. I may not always use the correct semantics, wording, etc., but for the life of me, I just don't understand why anyone takes issue with the subject. Perhaps I'm being naive or there's something going on that I just don't know about. I don't think so, but I'm remaining open minded.

I get the "majority rules" and I am 100% in favor of that whether or not the preferred outcome is the one I would want. Believe me, I've voted in a lot of elections that certainly didn't go the way that I would have liked. I think my issue lies more with the fact that people are being asked to vote on something so discriminatory in the first place.

I'm really hoping years from now that kids look in their history books and wonder what about what the majority of people were actual thinking....LOL....

I had no issue with your semantics. I was referring to folks who say things like, "Marriage is between a man and a woman---gays should call their union a partnership." I don't understand why it matters.

I'm glad you are passionate about the issue. We have to vote on it, because there will always be the narrow-minded among us.

This topic has been discussed way too many times, but here it goes again. While I'm not a religious person, I see something wrong with same sex behaviors, though it's another topic. But with Mormonism, Christianity & this incl. Mormons state that sexual behaviors between man & man or woman & woman are wrong.

Mormons are justified in voting for Proposition 8 because they're voting against a behavior that goes against their religious beliefs. In justness to those who use religious faith to justify their positions against homosexuality, they always saw something wrong with same sex behaviors.

There's so much politics which surround homosexuality. I've written before on this blog that it has been my observation that the same groups which oppose repair therapy to cure or @least better treat homosexuality think it's OK to surgically maim a man to make him an artificial woman. In other words, they think it's wrong to seek the cure for homosexuality, but it's Okay to surgically maim some1 to make them what they're not.

Yes, GID & homosexuality are 2 different topics, but what is it about same sex behaviors that rank it to something comparable to ethnicity? Finally with GID, what they must do is cure Gender Dysphoria & not surgically maim some1 to make them what they're not & science has been sadly wasted maiming these men & women.
